Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) openly called for Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) to have her citizenship revoked and be deported to Somalia during an escalating feud on social media about the Minnesota Democrat’s comments in the wake of Charlie Kirk’s assassination.
Kirk, the 31-year-old founder of Turning Point USA, was fatally shot while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on September 10. Tyler Robinson, 22, has been arrested and charged with aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, two counts of obstruction of justice, two counts of witness tampering, and commission of a violent offense in the presence of a child. The state is seeking the death penalty.
Kirk was a staunch supporter of President Donald Trump, encouraging the young voters in his organization to vote for Trump during his presidential campaigns and speaking at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee last year. In the wake of Kirk’s death, Trump and other Republicans have broadly blamed the “radical left” for the shooting.
Omar was born in Mogadishu, Somalia, and moved to New York in 1995 when her family received asylum, becoming a U.S. citizen in 2000 at the age of 17.
She was criticized for comments she made about Kirk during a Sept. 11 interview with Mehdi Hasan, in which the two strongly condemned the murder but also criticized those who were ignoring comments Kirk had made to “talk[] about him just wanting to have a civil debate,” and “completely pretend that his words and actions have not been recorded.”
Trump and other Republicans blasted the timing and content of Omar’s comments, accusing her of celebrating Kirk’s murder. Both Omar and Hasan pushed back on the criticism, highlighting the part of the interview where she expressed sympathy for Kirk’s widow and two young children.
Mace was not dissuaded, loudly voicing her support for Omar to be censured and kicked off her committee assignments.
“If you celebrate murder, maybe Somalia can take you back,” wrote Mace.
“I know you aren’t well or smart but I hope someone can explain to you that there isn’t a correlation between my committee assignments and deportation,” Omar retorted, and then pointed out that they were neighbors in the congressional office hallways. “Regardless of what you do with these committees, my office will continue to be next to you and I will continue to be in Congress.”
“We would love to see you deported back to Somalia next,” Mace fired back.
Mace posted a number of other tweets accusing Omar of committing immigration fraud and marrying her brother — accusations Omar has vociferously denied as “absurd and offensive” — and calling for her to be deported, as Omar posted her own tweets disputing Mace’s claims about her comments about Kirk. The back-and-forth kept circling back to Mace saying Omar should be deported.
“One-way ticket to Somalia with your name on it, Ilhan Omar,” tweeted Mace.
“I am going soon, so please drop off the tickets on your way to your office, I am next door,” Omar quipped. “Thanks in advance.”
After Mace posted about “leading the floor debate” on the resolution to censure Omar, the Democrat posted another tweet asking, “Is your ridiculous censure about me being born in Somalia Because that’s just as crazy as you are.”
“Would love to see you get the help you need next,” Omar added. “You belong in rehab, not Congress.”
