Bill Belichick released a statement Thursday reaffirming his commitment to the University of North Carolina amid speculation that he’s seeking a buyout.

The start of the Belichick era at UNC has been anything but smooth sailing. Before the season even began, the program was marred with controversy due to the presence of Jordon Hudson — Belichick’s 24-year-old girlfriend.

Hudson famously interrupted a Belichick interview on CBS when the coach was asked a question about their relationship; and reports that followed that moment gave the impression that Hudson played a domineering role in Belichick’s daily operations at UNC football.

Since the start of the season, the attention has shifted away from Hudson. Unfortunately for Belichick, the focus is now on the poor product on the field. At the time of this writing, the Tar Heels were 2-3.

Their most recent game was a humiliating 38-10 loss against Clemson.

It’s gotten so bad that Belichick was considering jumping ship, according to Guardian reporter Ollie Connolly.

Sources told Connolly that Belichick “has signaled a willingness to trigger his own $1 million buyout if he can find a soft landing with another team or in media.” They also told him they expect significant changes to the coaching staff “within two weeks.”

Hours later, Belichick posted a statement on UNC’s social media channels:

I’m fully committed to UNC football and the program we’re building here.

Also included was a statement from UNC athletic director Bubba Cunningham, who said, “Coach Belichick has the full support of the Department of Athletics and University.”
