A new report this week from North Carolina NBC affiliate WRAL dove deep into the “toxic environment” that’s taken over UNC football under head coach Bill Belichick.
At the time of the Monday report, the Tar Heels had a record of 2-3 — good for 14th in the ACC — and had yet to win a game in the conference. The most recent loss, and arguably the most embarrassing one to date, came at the hands of Clemson. As noted by countless other sports outlets, Clemson’s offense had been among the worst in the country to start the season. En route to a 38-10 shellacking over the Tar Heels, however, the Tigers averaged more than 10 yards per play in the first half.
Just five games into this new era of UNC football, many have already begun to question Belichick’s future with the program.
A report from WRAL’s Pat Welter detailed just how tumultuous things are internally, as well. Sources — including parents of players and some members of the UNC staff — have described the environment as “toxic” and “a complete disaster.”
The report continued:
Failure to communicate with players and parents has also furthered the divide. According to sources, the players who chose to stay at UNC after Mack Brown’s firing didn’t meet Belichick for weeks after he was hired. Parents were told not to approach Belichick. They didn’t meet Belichick and his staff until the “Practice like a Pro” spring game.
“There’s been no communication with coaches and parents, period,” a parent of a current UNC player said. “None, zero, zilch. Not one email from a coach, one text, phone call, nothing.”
Sources also accused the coaching staff of preferential treatment toward players personally recruited by Belichick. This treatment includes reserved parking spaces, additional tickets for family members, and even a lack of punishment for missing practices.
From a coaching standpoint, however, sources seemed to be in agreement that Belichick’s presence has been positive. Unfortunately for Belichick, coaching at the college level requires much more than that:
Belichick himself has been praised by multiple sources for his one-on-one coaching; it’s his ability to run the program that’s being questioned by parents and players.
“Bill shuts people out. He’s limited in what he says,” a source said.
Belichick will say “hi” when he sees players in the building. His GM, Michael Lombardi, has been described by multiple sources as “rude” and “nasty.”
“Nobody likes him,” a source said.
