Former Vice President Kamala Harris told podcast host Steven Bartlett that she was “angry” after a phone call from then-President Joe Biden just before she was about to debate soon-to-be-President Donald Trump, attacking Biden for showing he was “all about himself.”
VP Harris stunned the political media world with surprisingly candid excerpts from her campaign tome 107 Days, and has continued to make waves on a media tour in support of the book since its Sept. 23 release.
Harris gave a lengthy and outspoken interview to Steven Bartlett on his Diary of a CEO podcast this week, during which Bartlett asked about a phone call that the ex-VP wrote about in the book.
VP Harris revealed that the call colored her opinion of the president, and even said she believed his desire for her to win was self-serving:
EX-VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS: I’m in the hotel room with Doug, with my husband, and the president calls. And I was told that he wanted to call me so that I’d be ready, and I was so sure it was to buck me up and “go get him!”
He did say that for the first beat.
And then he went on to talk about a group of people in Pennsylvania who were saying bad things about me because they heard I was saying bad thing about him.
And when I hung up the phone, I was just, I was, it was unbelievable! And I was yes, I was angry! And deeply disappointed.
It just. It was so unnecessary. There are only two people in the world other than me that has debated this guy, Hillary Clinton and him.
And you know what it’s like, it’s–.
Going into a debate with the stakes being that high and Trump hadn’t agreed to another debate, the stakes were so high. So that’s an example of what I mean.
STEVEN BARTLETT: You took something from that. You took an underlying message about one’s intentions from that, because I would. If someone called me in the lead up to debate prep and said something like that to me, I would assume that they don’t want the best for me.
EX-VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS: My takeaway is his motivation was all about himself.
STEVEN BARTLETT: That’s what I would assume from that.
EX-VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS: Obviously, right. Yeah. It wasn’t about my performance at the debate.
STEVEN BARTLETT: Do you think he wanted you to win the election?
EX-VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS: I do because I was the only one who would be able to preserve his legacy.
STEVEN BARTLETT: But even that’s about him.
EX-VICE PRESIDENT KAMALA HARRIS: Well, if I had to assume one of the reasons why he’d want me to win. If– yeah.
