Balgarianovinite.com “If the government does not resign this week, we will submit a motion of no confidence,” said Continue the Change leader Assen Vassilev at a news briefing of the Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB) parliamentary group on Monday. According to him, the people want new elections, and this opportunity must be given to them.
“The protest last night was peaceful and ended peacefully. During the large march, there was not a single incident. The ugly scenes were caused by provocateurs, while the Ministry of Interior remained passive and did not react. Attempts to turn the protest violent were limited only to the MRF headquarters. The center of Sofia was left without electricity, precisely along the route where the march was supposed to pass,” said Vasilev.
On Monday evening, tens of thousands of citizens took to the streets in Sofia to protest the adoption of the 2026 State Budget Bill. As the protest moved to the office buildings of GERB and MRF – New Beginning in central Sofia, tensions escalated. Footage from major TV stations showed clashes between masked protesters and police officers. Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria, which organized the protest, distanced itself from the acts of vandalism and violence that occurred.
“The government may have heard the protest and withdrawn the budget. This could have been avoided if it had happened last week. Now it is too late,” Vassilev said. According to him, the people at the protest want the resignation of this government, as well as the removal of Borissov and Peevski from politics.
“This government does not have the moral right to govern the country any longer,” Vassilev said.
Ivaylo Mirchev, Co-Chairman of Yes, Bulgaria, which is part of the CC-DB group, told the briefing that an attempt was made on Monday night to discredit the protest. Behind this attempt lie the actions and inaction of the Minister of the Interior, Mirchev specified. According to him, the lack of police presence in front of the National Assembly and the MRF – New Beginning headquarters speaks of a scenario. “There are sufficient indications that a clear scenario has been developed to discredit this protest. The only person responsible for this is the Minister of the Interior. His resignation is not even up for discussion. It should have been submitted on Monday night,” Mirchev added.
He said that withdrawing the draft state budget would not change anything and that people want the government to resign. “If anyone thinks that returning the budget will save the day and reduce public tension, they are very much mistaken. The protesters were shouting ‘Resign.’ This government must resign and we must go to elections,” he added.
