Balgarianovinite.com According to economists’ estimates, inflation in Romania has increased the cost of food during the holidays by 10% compared to the same time last year. Due to the higher prices, Romanians are buying smaller quantities and opting for cheaper goods, BTA correspondent Martina Gancheva observed on the ground.
While looking at the meat counter in a large supermarket, pensioner George Damian shared: “Everything is more expensive. Pork tenderloin, for example, has reached RON 40 (BGN 16) per kilogram.” Another customer echoed his concerns: “Last year I spent about RON 850 (BGN 340) on the holiday dinner. Now it will definitely cost me more.”
A survey cited by local media shows that most Romanians will spend up to RON 500 (BGN 200) on Christmas dinner. Only 16% are willing to spend RON 1000 (BGN 400).
Meat, wine, and cozonac (sweet holiday bread) are the most purchased items for Christmas, saw BTA. On the other hand, Romanians rarely buy which, as its price has risen by 8% to 15%.
Decoration sales are also expected to take a hit. An 8-metre-long string of Christmas lights with 100 bulbs would sell for RON 15 (BGN 6) in 2024, while this year its price has gone up by 33% to RON 20 (BGN 8). Less than a week before Christmas, however, large chains are offering discounts of up to 50% on holiday decorations. Thus, an artificial Christmas tree can be purchased for RON 179 (BGN 72) instead of the originally advertised price of RON 399 (BGN 160).
