Sean Hannity said his phone was “blowing up” on Tuesday after state Rep. Zohran Mamdani (D) was elected mayor of New York.
Mamdani defeated former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who lost to Mamdani in June’s Democratic primary, but launched an independent bid. Republican Curtis Sliwa came in third. A democratic socialist who will be New York’s first Muslim mayor, Mamdani has been held up by Republicans and even some centrist Democrats as too radical a candidate to elevate within the party. In the closing days of the campaign, the opposition to Mamdani got increasingly nasty, with one pro-Cuomo PAC running an ad depicting him in front of the Twin Towers falling on Sept. 11, 2001.
During Fox News’s election night coverage on Tuesday, Bret Baier predicted that Mamdani’s win would “benefit” Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), who is running for governor next year.
“She, tonight, is probably much more well-positioned than she was yesterday because of the situation,” Baier said.
“I don’t know, Bret, if I quite agree with that analysis in this sense,” Hannity responded. “And I honestly feel bad. I have friends of mine in New York. My phone is blowing up. They are officially depressed and scared… A full nine percent of people say that they will leave if he in fact got elected. Before today, they said if he got elected, they are gonna leave New York City.”
Hannity was referring to a poll purporting to show that nine percent of New Yorkers, or nearly one million people, would leave the city if Mamdani were elected.
Mamdani’s win was part of a big night for Democrats. In New Jersey’s gubernatorial race, Rep. Mikie Sherrill (D) defeated Republican Jack Ciatterelli. Meanwhile, in Virginia’s governor’s race, former Rep. Abigail Spanberger (D) defeated Lt. Gov. Winsome Earle-Sears (R).
