FBI agents obtained documents labeled classified during their search of John Bolton’s Washington office last month, according to new court filings.
An inventory of items obtained during the August 22 raid includes documents referring to weapons of mass destruction and more. Bolton has worked in a variety of roles throughout his career, including United Nations ambassador and National Security Advisor in President Donald Trump’s first term.
The FBI’s raid uncovered “travel memo documents with pages labeled secret and a number of other documents labeled “classified,” including one referring to weapons of mass destruction. One set of files was marked “confidential,” but redacted in the official inventory.
Bolton’s lawyer has denied any wrongdoing by Bolton and said the documents obtained are years or even decades old.
The FBI also confiscated four computers and a flash drive. No charges have been filed.
“These are the kinds of ordinary records, many of which are 20 years old or more, that would be kept by a 40-year career official who served at the State Department, as an Assistant Attorney General, the U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations, and the National Security Advisor,” Bolton’s lawyer said in a statement about the documents.
Bolton has long been a vocal critic of Trump, calling him “stunningly uninformed” in his 2020 book The Room Where it Happened. Just days before the FBI raid, he also said he feared Trump’s “retribution presidency.”
According to the affidavit on the Bolton raid, everything was instigated an alleged hack of Bolton’s AOL email by a foreign government.
