Harrowing footage shot by a commuting driver in Sacramento shows the moment that a REACH Air Medical Services helicopter crashed onto Highway 50, just feet from his car.
The clip, uploaded to TikTok by Davyd Bychkoviak, shows the low-flying aircraft drop in altitude before plunging onto the eastbound lanes shortly after 7 p.m. local time.
Authorities said the chopper had just completed a patient drop-off at a nearby hospital on Monday evening when it suffered an “in-air emergency” on its return to base.
Three people, who were all inside the helicopter when it went down, were critically injured.
“There were three crew members on board – a pilot, a nurse and a paramedic,” said Sacramento Fire Department spokesperson Captain Justin Sylvia.
“No vehicles on the freeway were involved in the crash,” he added, calling that outcome “mind-blowing” given the aircraft came down in the middle of a busy highway.
One female crew member was trapped beneath the wreckage and freed by a fire captain and a group of bystanders before additional units arrived.
“People reported that they basically saw the helicopter kind of going down quickly,” Sylvia said. “So all the traffic slowed down.”
Photos from the scene showed the helicopter lying on its side, debris scattered across the tarmac, and emergency workers surrounding the wreckage.
REACH Air Medical Services confirmed all three crew members were taken to nearby hospitals.
“We are in the process of determining the details of this situation, as well as the condition of the REACH crew involved,” the company said in a statement.
