Egypt is a partner of strategic importance for Bulgaria and the European Union. In recent years, political dialogue and visits on both sides have brought new dynamics to bilateral relations, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said at a ceremony for the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum in Giza, as quoted by his Press Secretariat on Sunday.
At the invitation of Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, heads of State and government leaders from around the world attended the ceremony. The Grand Egyptian Museum houses tens of thousands of exhibits, including thousands of artefacts from the tomb of Tutankhamun, presented together for the first time.
Speaking to Egypt’s national news agency MENA, President Radev said that the Grand Egyptian Museum showcases the wonders of Ancient Egypt, its civilization, culture, and traditions. Bulgaria, as the heir to one of Europe’s oldest cultures, deeply appreciates the importance of preserving and sharing the rich historical and cultural heritage with the world, he added.
Bulgaria and Egypt have opened a new chapter in their relations by establishing new mechanisms for dialogue and partnership, including joint committees for cooperation and economic cooperation, Radev noted. The two countries will celebrate the 100th anniversary of their diplomatic relations in 2026, and President Radev expressed his hope that his Egyptian counterpart will visit Bulgaria to further strengthen bilateral ties.
Trade between Bulgaria and Egypt reached USD 1.8 billion in 2024, with Bulgaria among Egypt’s key grain suppliers, Radev said. Bulgarian companies are also showing growing interest in investing in Egypt and establishing partnerships, further expanding areas of bilateral cooperation.
The official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum – an example of Egypt’s cultural diplomacy – was hosted by President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi and his wife, Entissar Amer, who welcomed the distinguished guests, including Bulgarian President Rumen Radev and First Lady Desislava Radeva.
During the event, President Radev conferred with Khaled El-Enany, who has been nominated by UNESCO’s Executive Board as the next Director-General of the organization.
