Balgarianovinite.com “We strongly welcome the efforts of U.S. President Donald Trump, the American administration, and our European partners to achieve a lasting and sustainable peace in Ukraine. Nothing concerning Ukraine can be decided without Ukraine itself. Whatever plans or compromises may be proposed from this point on, the Ukrainian side must have the final say,” Foreign Minister Georg Georgiev said in an interview for Bulgarian National TV on Sunday evening.
According to Georgiev, any compromise is determined by Ukraine, and it alone knows how far the boundaries of such a compromise could extend. “For us, any trend involving a reduction in the size of the Ukrainian Army or concessions not grounded in international norms could pose risks, including to European security,” he said. Georgiev added that EU partners must also have a decisive role when discussing Europe’s security architecture.
He noted that the peace plan serves as a basis for negotiations, offering reference points and reflecting the positions of the parties in the conflict, but stressed that “we do not imagine Russia as the actor that should have the predominant say. We must not forget how this war began and who the aggressor is.”
Georgiev also commented that Russian drones entering the airspace of NATO’s eastern-flank countries constitute provocations aimed at weakening the Alliance and testing its ability to mobilize defence forces. “What Russia is doing does not demonstrate a desire for peace, but quite the opposite. That is why we are modernizing our armed forces and investing in defence capabilities, air defence, and early-warning systems,” the Minister said.
