Balgarianovinite.com Another protest against corruption in the judicial system in Romania took place on Wednesday evening in Victory Square, in front of the government building in Bucharest, local media reported.
Braving near-freezing temperatures, demonstrators illuminated the area with the flashlights on their mobile phones and unfurled three large banners carrying a message to the Romanian prime minister. “Bolojan, Romania is calling you,” read one of the banners. “Justice, not corruption,” the crowd chanted. Some participants waved the flag of the European Union.
“Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan has handed judicial reform over to a ‘working group.’ This means yet another delay, yet another silence. But Romania is neither silent nor forgetful,” the organizers commented. They are also planning another action under the slogan “Bolojan, take out the trash,” which will take place on Friday (December 19).
“The independence of Romania’s judicial system is seriously compromised. The leadership of the courts and prosecutor’s offices has been captured by a network of political and judicial influence that blocks high-level corruption cases, protects abuses, and persecutes honest magistrates. Without immediate action, the rule of law will continue to be emptied of its substance,” the protest organizers from the Declic community noted on their official Facebook page.
The wave of public discontent swept across Romania on December 10, following the publication and broadcast of the documentary film ‘Justice Held Captive’ by the news website Recorder, in which several former and current magistrates speak about pressure being exerted on the judicial system.
This prompted Romanian President Nicușor Dan to call on all magistrates to write to him directly about the problems they face and to organize a meeting on December 22 in Bucharest to identify weaknesses in the judicial system.
