California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) announced on X Sunday that he’s suing Donald Trump for sending 300 California troops to Portland, OR, after a judge thwarted the president’s attempt to federalize Oregon’s National Guard.
“His deployment of the California National Guard to Oregon isn’t about crime,” Newsom wrote. “It’s about power. He is using our military as political pawns to build up his own ego. It’s appalling. It’s un-American. And it must stop.”
Trump’s move came after a federal judge he appointed temporarily blocked him from deploying 200 Oregon National Guardsmen to Portland, which Newsom pointed out in a second post:
“After a federal court blocked his attempt to federalize the Oregon National Guard, Donald Trump is deploying 300 California National Guard personnel into Oregon. They are on their way there now. We are taking this fight back to court. The public cannot stay silent in the face of such reckless and authoritarian conduct by the President of the United States.”
In a statement, Newsom told The San Francisco Chronicle, “This is a breathtaking abuse of the law and power. The commander-in-chief is using the U.S. military as a political weapon against American citizens.”
District Court Judge Karin Immergut ruled Saturday to temporarily block Trump’s use of the Oregon National Guard for 14 days, writing, “This is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law.”
Trump bashed the judge — whom he appointed in his first term — during a press gaggle Sunday, and repeatedly misidentified her as a man.
“I appointed the judge and he [sic] goes like that,” Trump said. “So, I wasn’t served well. Obviously, if he [sic] made that decision — Portland is burning to the ground. You have agitators, instigators, all you have to do is look at your television, turn on your television, read your newspapers. It’s burning to the ground. The governor, the mayor, the politicians, they’re petrified for their lives. And that judge, he [sic] ought to be ashamed of himself [sic] .”
