Balgarianovinite.com The June issue of the Bulgarian News Agency’s (BTA) LIK magazine dedicated to the 90th birth anniversaries of artists Christo Javacheff – Christo and his wife Jeanne-Claude, has been translated into German. The translated edition will be presented at the Bulgarian Cultural Institute (BCI) in Berlin, Germany, on Monday.
The event is part of a joint initiative by the BCI, BTA, and the National Art Gallery, which will mark the birth anniversaries of the two artists with the LIK issue’s presentation and the 30th anniversary of the wrapping of the Reichstag with the National Art Gallery’s exhibition “The Wrapped Reichstag, Berlin (1971-1995)”. Special guests will include Culture Minister Marian Bachev, Gallery Director Aneliya Nikolova, and BTA Director General Kiril Valchev.
Christo’s life and projects have left a remarkable and lasting mark on world art, the BCI said. But no less interesting are the reflections and views of the Bulgarian-born artist on everyday life, his work, his relationship with Jeanne-Claude, and artistry. To illustrate this part of Christo’s personality, the pages of LIK magazine feature excerpts from interviews he has given over the years to various national and international media outlets.
The Institute adds that the exhibition at the National Art Gallery, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the birth of the iconic artistic duo, is being presented for the first time in Bulgaria. “Among the exhibits is the National Gallery’s first original acquisition related to Christo’s work, ‘The Wrapped Reichstag (Project for Berlin, 1971–1995)’ from 1986, as well as collages, photographs, video materials, and archival documents tracing the long road to the realization of this extraordinary project,” the BCI said.
June 13 marked the 90th anniversary of the birth of Christo and Jeanne-Claude. In 2025, three major anniversaries related to their work were celebrated: 40 years since the wrapping of Pont Neuf (or the New Bridge in Paris), 30 years since the wrapping of the Reichstag in Berlin, and 20 years since the installation of The Gates in New York.
The premiere of the Bulgarian edition took place on June 25 at the newly established Christo and Jeanne-Claude Center in Gabrovo, Christo’s hometown. Guests from the MaxiM Hall in Sofia, as well as from the BTA press clubs in Bulgaria and abroad, joined the event via video link. Among the authors of the publication are Evgeniya Atanasova-Teneva, who has established herself as an expert on Christo’s work and biography, Margarita Dorovska from the Christo and Jeanne-Claude Center, and journalist Daniel Nenchev.
With a thematic chronology, the BTA publication traces the history of Christo Yavacheff and his wife as presented in the BTA’s news over the years. At the beginning of their career, publications were difficult to find, with information usually passing through secret bulletins. Over the decades, however, journalists began to feel more and more comfortable reporting and commenting on the work of Jeanne-Claude and Christo. Thus, the chronology contains information about some of their biggest projects – The Gates in New York, the wrapping of the Reichstag, the Arc de Triomphe, and others.
By the end of the year, LIK’s issue about Christo and Jeanne-Claude will be available in German, French, and English.
