Former Vice President Kamala Harris continued to incorrectly claim the 2024 election was the “closest” of the 21st Century before standing up and yelling President Donald Trump “does not have a mandate!” during her book tour this weekend.
Harris — during a Saturday event in Houston, TX to promote her new book, 107 Days — gave herself a pat on the back for running an “unprecedented” 3.5 month campaign against a man, Trump, who “had been running for 10 years.”
She was so fired up she then got out of her seat and shouted:
“Here’s the other thing that is quite unprecedented — and, it was the tightest, closest presidential election in the 21st Century. He does not have a mandate! That is not a mandate! That is not a mandate!’”
That proclamation led to an eruption from the Hobby Center for Performing Arts, a 2,650 seat venue where the event was held.
“And he never did!” One attendee could be heard yelling back at the ex-vice president.
Harris then joked that moderator Carlos Eduardo Espina, a self-described “community organizer and immigrant rights activist,” was so animated by her pep talk that he got up too.
This was not the first time Harris has made the bogus claim the 2024 election was the “closest” of the century. It has been a rallying cry on her recent tour, with Harris repeating the claim at her alma mater, Howard University, on Sept. 27. Harris also made the same claim during an appearance on MSNBC last month.
But Harris did not lose the closest election of the 21st Century by any metric. Trump beat Harris in the electoral college last year, 312-226 — the widest margin since 2012. And Harris wasn’t closer than any other loser in the popular vote, either. Hillary Clinton actually won the popular vote despite losing — putting her closer than Harris on that front. And she wasn’t the closest to “tipping” the Electoral College — calculated by evaluating the shortest possible path to winning enough states to take the White House — falling short of the performances of former Vice John Kerry in 2004, Clinton in 2016, and Trump in 2020.
Harris, during her Houston event, said she missed the “optimism, enthusiasm, and dare I say, joy” that surrounded her 2024 campaign. But she told the audience to not be depressed, because that feeling is still “in you.” She then told them:
“And no one election or individual or circumstance can take that from you. It is the light that we each carry inside of us, it is the light we see in each other… it is the light that carries us, in particular right now, during the darkest of times. And we cannot lose sight of that or let that light be in any way extinguished.”
Watch above.
