Jimmy Kimmel mocked President Donald Trump’s Truth Social meltdown over the host’s return to air in his second monologue after a six-day suspension, branding the president a “bully” and ridiculing his threats against ABC.
Trump had initially celebrated Kimmel’s removal from air as “great news for America,” but when the suspension was reversed, the president was furious.
Moments before the late-night host’s return on Tuesday, Trump unleashed at ABC in an online tirade, threatening to sue the network for giving Kimmel “his job back.”
“I can’t believe ABC Fake News gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back. The White House was told by ABC that his Show was cancelled!” the president wrote.
On Wednesday night’s show, Kimmel began by reflecting on all the messages he’d received from friends after his suspension was lifted before taking a moment to pick apart a message from Trump – his “one special friend” – line-by-line.
“The Mad Red Hatter wrote, ‘I can’t believe ABC fake news gave Jimmy Kimmel his job back,’” Kimmel read aloud, before addressing Trump directly: “You can’t believe they gave me my job back? I can’t believe we gave you your job back!”
Kimmel continued to read aloud Trump’s warning that the show “puts the network in jeopardy.”
“There’s the threat again,” Kimmel noted to the audience, before reading the president’s musing that he’d sued ABC once but that its reinstatement of Jimmy Kimmel Live! seemed more “lucrative.”
“Only Donald Trump would try to prove he wasn’t threatening ABC by threatening ABC,” the host mocked.
As the monologue went on, Kimmel unloaded on Trump as a “bully” and that giving in to him once would not appease him, but lead to more of the same: “I talk about Trump more than anything because he’s a bully. I don’t like bullies. I played the clarinet in high school, OK? So I just don’t like him. Donald Trump is an old-fashioned ’80s movie style bully, taking your lunch money — and if you give it to him once, he’ll take it again.”
