President Donald Trump has asked the Supreme Court for an emergency order to remove Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook from the central bank’s leadership in his latest bid to fire her.
The move was expected after an appeals court rejected Trump’s latest attempt to forcibly remove her from office earlier this week.
Cook has been steadfast in her efforts to remain in office, maintaining for weeks that Trump can’t fire her without cause.
Abbe Lowell, a lawyer for Cook, previously told the Associated Press that she “will continue to carry out her sworn duties as a Senate-confirmed Board Governor.”
The saga began last month when Bill Pulte, Trump’s Federal Housing Finance Agency chief, accused Cook of mortgage fraud, claiming she had listd an Atlanta condo as her primary residence, two weeks after taking a loan on a Michigan home she also declared as her primary residence.
Pulte said he handed his findings over to the Department of Justice.
Trump quickly pounced, saying he would fire Cook if she didn’t resign. When she didn’t, Trump penned a letter to Cook that he posted on Truth Social, informing her that “you are hereby removed from your position on the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve, effective immediately.”
Cook, who is the first Black woman to serve on the Board of Governors, has not been charged with a crime.
