MAGA supporters incorrectly attributed a sea of white t-shirts at Penn State’s most recent game as a show of support for slain political commentator Charlie Kirk.
On Saturday, Penn State hosted Oregon in a highly-anticipated matchup between two of the best college football teams in the nation. Ahead of the game, conservative podcaster Benny Johnson gave away 5,000 t-shirts with “Freedom” printed across the chest. The shirt was a signature piece of Kirk’s merchandise.
During the game, Johnson posted a photo on X/Twitter claiming that “Freedom” has “Taken Over the Student Section at Penn State.” The video showed two people wearing the shirt among of sea of thousands of other white shirts.
Saturday’s game, however, was one of Penn State’s “White Out” games. During these games, Penn State fans dress in the color and make the stands of Beaver Stadium almost entirely white.
More than a few right-wing accounts — and even the New York Post — falsely claimed the abundance of white in the stands was a tribute to Kirk.
On Monday, Fox News showed the footage with similar framing. On The Faulkner Focus, the chyron claimed that “thousands” wore the shirt in honor of Kirk. The footage on screen, however, showed just two people in the stands.
