Mike Johnson Stuns Political World by Appearing to Agree Trump Is ‘Unwell’

Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) raised eyebrows across the political world this week with an answer he gave to Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-PA), who confronted Johnson on Capitol Hill over President Donald Trump’s recent behavior.

Dean and Johnson were filmed from a distance as she went off on him over Trump’s recent AI-generated attack on top Democrats and his bombastic speech to military leaders, which included a suggestion that U.S. cities should be “training grounds” for soldiers.

MSNBC got hold of one part of the conversation, which the network ran on Wednesday night. The exchange went as follows:

DEAN: The president is unhinged. He is unwell. What are you–

JOHNSON: A lot of folks on your side are too. I don’t control–

DEAN: Oh my God, please! That performance in front of the generals?

JOHNSON: I didn’t see it.

DEAN: That is so dangerous. You know I serve on Foreign Affairs and Appropriations. This is a collision of those two things. Our allies are looking elsewhere. Our enemies are laughing.

Political journalist Andrew Egger shared the clip, which quickly went viral, and commented, “Very interesting that Johnson’s response to ‘the president is unhinged’ isn’t ‘how dare you, ma’am, the president is our greatest, most powerful patriot’ but rather ‘a lot of folks on your side are too.’”

Writer Richard Hanania replied:

They all talk about the president like he’s a grandparent with dementia.

House Democrat staffer Aaron Fritschner quipped, “‘Too’ is fun.”

The clip quickly spread like wildfire across social media, with both right and left-leaning accounts posting it. The Daily Caller shared the clip, which resulted in many users criticizing Johnson.

“Speaker did very little to defend Trump! Trump isn’t unwell. What a crock!” wrote one user in reply to the Caller post, for example.

Other sites, like Townhall.com, shared the clip but offered a more favorable framing. Townhall captioned it:

UH OH: Rep. M. Dean get’s way too close to Speaker Johnson, starts pleading:
“The President is unhinged. He is unwell….Our enemies are laughing. You have a President who is unwell.”
There’s NO WAY she don’t see the hypocrisy of that statement.
