MSNBC’s Antonia Hylton reported on Saturday that No Kings rally organizers estimate they drew close to 300,000 in New York City, a major increase over the last No Kings protest.
Hylton reported from the New York City No Kings rally, one of thousands of events protesting President Donald Trump’s administration around the country. Millions in total were expected by organizers and the early numbers are proving those expectations likely weren’t far off.
Organizers predicted they’d get about 150,000-200,000 demonstrators to come out in New York, but early numbers show that number is closer to 300,000.
Hylton reported:
Organizers expected about 150 to 200,000 people, but we just spoke to one of the organizers, and they said that they now believe the number was closer to 300,000. So that’s a 50% increase from the first time that we saw these protests. For anyone who doesn’t remember, that was Trump’s birthday. That was the day of the military parade. That shocked and alarmed a lot of Americans.
The last No Kings rallies were held in June on Trump’s birthday and the same day of a major military parade in Washington, D.C.
Hylton reported that the New York City protest was thinning out at 3:00 p.m. after police began telling people to disperse. She added that she had not seen one instance of violence after noting Republican critics predicted potential clashes at the rallies.
“Chief among the concerns of the people I’ve been talking to today is the aggressive immigration enforcement that we’ve seen across the country, and this fear that what’s transpiring in Portland and in Chicago will soon come here to New York City,” she said.
Hylton had earlier interviewed a Vietnam veteran who blasted ICE agents and the administration’s mass deportations.
“I saw young kids being dragged out,” he said. I’ve dealt with real soldiers. American soldiers, North Vietnamese soldiers. These are real soldiers, these are brave men. Soldiers fight other soldiers. Soldiers do not fight women and children. What ICE is doing is outrageous, they are a paramilitary force, that’s why I’m using the term soldier.”
