Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado dedicated her Nobel Peace Prize to “the suffering people of Venezuela” and President Donald Trump on Friday.
The Nobel Committee honored Machado on Friday “for her tireless work promoting democratic rights” in her home country of Venezuela, despite anticipation that Trump might receive the prize for his Gaza peace deal. Trump supporters in the U.S. and in Israel alike pushed for the committee to give the president the award after Israel and Hamas signed his 20-point plan just days ago.
Taking to X, however, Machado extended her dedication to Trump, crediting the president for his “decisive support” in her cause.
Machado wrote: “This recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans is a boost to conclude our task: to conquer Freedom. We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy.”
She added: “I dedicate this prize to the suffering people of Venezuela and to President Trump for his decisive support of our cause!”
Trump has long sought the award, arguing that his foreign policy record has been undervalued. Those ambitions are far from over. Entries for the 2025 prize closed in January, before Trump’s inauguration but his work brokering the Gaza deal could see him pushed for the 2026 prize.
Machado, meanwhile, has long praised Trump’s stance on Venezuela, thanking him earlier this year for “unwavering support” as her movement seeks to end dictator Nicolás Maduro’s rule.
