Balgarianovinite.com During a video conference on Monday, outgoing Defence Minister Atanas Zapryanov and Deputy Chief of Defence Lieutenant General Mihail Popov congratulated Bulgarian military personnel participating in missions and operations abroad, the Defence Ministry said here on Monday.
“You can all be proud of your contribution to strengthening national and regional security, and to establishing the authority of the Bulgarian army within the EU and NATO”, said Zapryanov. He emphasized that, in the face of growing global security challenges, those serving in missions and operations outside the country must reinforce the Bulgarian army’s reputation as a reliable ally and partner and play an equal and dignified role in maintaining peace and security.
Zapryanov added that the achievements of the armed forces this year give a reason for even greater motivation and optimism. He pointed out several examples: a 30% increase in military personnel salaries, which has boosted interest in the profession, completion of the new ship “Hrabri” (Brave) and its acceptance into the Navy, delivery of the first eight F-16 Block 70 aircraft to the Air Force, the IRIS-T anti-aircraft missile systems contract, and development of a national plan for investment in the European defence industry under the SAFE instrument. “We expect the European Commission to approve nine new projects for the modernization of our armed forces, worth EUR 3.2 billion, in early February. This will provide a significant boost to the acceleration of the modernization of the armed forces”, said the outgoing Defence Minister.
The Deputy Chief of Defence, Lieutenant General Mihail Popov, also congratulated the Bulgarian contingents on behalf of the military leadership of the Ministry of Defence. He was adamant that, as with previous Bulgarian contingents, the current ones would earn the gratitude of commanders of international operations and missions abroad. “Once again, you will prove that Bulgaria is a reliable ally and continue our tradition of making a serious contribution to maintaining peace and stability in the Balkans and Iraq”, said the Deputy Chief of Defence.
Currently, almost 150 Bulgarian Armed Forces personnel are performing their duties in four NATO operations and missions, as well as four European Union operations. During the meeting, reports were given by Lieutenant Colonel Milen Chakarov, national commander of the contingent in the NATO Stabilisation Force in Kosovo (KFOR), Major Georgi Garelov, commander of the National Support Element and assistant national commander of the contingent in the Regional Command West in Kosovo, Major Rosen Nachev, national commander of the contingent participating in the EU operation in Bosnia and Herzegovina, “ALTHEA” and Lieutenant Colonel Atanas Ovcharov, national commander of the contingent in NATO’s non-combat mission in Iraq.
