Prime Minister Rosen Zhelyazkov welcomed the deepening of trade and economic relations between Bulgaria and Hungary during a meeting with Hungarian President Tamás Sulyok, the government press service said on Monday.
Bulgaria and Hungary enjoy excellent friendly relations based on deep historical ties and traditions, Zhelyazkov said, emphasizing the shared interest in further strengthening bilateral economic cooperation, particularly in strategic areas such as investment, transport, innovation, and high technology.
The Prime Minister noted that it is crucial to make full use of the opportunities offered by the EU single market. He also highlighted the government’s focused efforts to introduce the euro in Bulgaria, underscoring its long-term economic benefits.
Zhelyazkov thanked Hungary for its support of Bulgaria’s Schengen accession and pointed out Bulgaria’s efforts to secure the EU’s external borders. He also emphasized cooperation with Turkiye on this issue and the significant decline in migration pressure.
The two leaders discussed energy cooperation, regional security, and the challenges facing Central and Eastern Europe and the continent as a whole. They stressed the strategic importance of the European integration of the Western Balkans. The war in Ukraine was also among the topics discussed. Zhelyazkov noted the importance of hosting a potential meeting between Trump and Putin, adding, that for Bulgaria “the most important thing is for the war to end as soon as possible, based on lasting and sustainable solutions”.
President Tamás Sulyok also praised the strong bilateral cooperation between Bulgaria and Hungary. He highlighted the importance of Bulgaria’s accession to the euro area and expressed support for its membership in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Sulyok also underscored the economic development of Central and Eastern European countries, stating that ending the war in Ukraine is in everyone’s shared interest.
Earlier in the day, President Sulyok met with Bulgarian President Rumen Radev, who invited him to visit Sofia.
