Following a one-on-one meeting with Hungary’s President Tamas Sulyok, Bulgarian President Rumen Radev said that “as a result of Hungary’s rational position, it is natural that Budapest will host the expected meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin”. The Bulgarian and Hungarian Presidents were speaking to the media in the Coat of Arms Hall of the presidential institution on Monday.
Sulyok is visiting Bulgaria at Radev’s invitation. On Sunday, he arrived in Bulgaria’s southern town of Smolyan to mark Bulgarian-Hungarian Friendship Day and the centenary of Hungarian poet and translator Laszlo Nagy.
“Hungary has remained consistent in its rational stance for peace through diplomacy, rather than through escalating armaments and prolonging the war, which I have long argued would only lead to more casualties, greater destruction, and further territorial losses for Ukraine,” Radev said.
The Bulgarian President noted that key topics in his talks with Sulyok included conflicts in the Middle East and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
Last week, Putin and Trump agreed to a second high-level meeting on the war in Ukraine, expected to take place in Budapest, after their talks in Alaska on August 15 failed to yield a breakthrough. The summit could take place within two weeks or slightly later, but many details still need to be finalized before a date can be confirmed, Reuters reported.
