Former Republican congressman Joe Walsh railed against the Democratic Party on Tuesday just three months after joining it, complaining that the leadership “just doesn’t f***ing understand the threat” posed by President Donald Trump.
“I know I’ve only been a Democrat for 3 plus months, so if I’m overstepping my bounds here I apologize, but damn… the leadership of my new party just doesn’t fucking understand the threat and isn’t fucking meeting this moment,” wrote Walsh in a social media post. “If you can’t relish fighting a fascist, then go home.”
The former congressman was reacting to a video of House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) stating that he and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) had sent a strongly-worded letter against Trump, “laying out our position very clearly.”
Walsh – who served in Congress for just two years between 2011 and 2013 – announced in June that he had joined the Democratic Party after years of supporting Democratic politicians as a registered independent.
“This former Republican Congressman, former Republican candidate for President, this former TEA Party champion is formally joining the Democratic Party,” announced Walsh in a blog post. “The stakes are simply too high to NOT become a Democrat.”
He continued, “I want to help Democrats win. And to win, Democrats must fight. I mean really fight. I’ll say it one more time: Democrats must FIGHT.”
In July, Walsh argued that the Democratic Party “should be big enough” for “socialists” like New York mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani as well as “conservative Democrats” like him.
Walsh left the Republican Party in 2020 and endorsed Joe Biden for president against Trump.
