Sen. Markwayne Mullin (R-OK) said the only reason one would protest President Donald Trump is if one had a “deranged hatred” of Trump.
Republicans have been drawing a fair amount of attention to the upcoming nationwide “No Kings” protests on Saturday. It is the second such demonstration against the Trump administration. Several prominent GOP politicians and pundits have baselessly claimed that protestors will be paid to demonstrate.
Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), for example, alleged that the “hate America” protests are organized by “the pro-Hamas wing” of the Democratic Party.
Mullin appeared on Monday’s edition of Hannity on Fox News, where he blamed the ongoing government shutdown on Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) and Senate Democrats for not backing the Republicans’ funding bill. Even though the GOP controls the Senate 53-47, 60 votes are required to overcome a procedural hurdle. Schumer is demanding Republicans agree to extend healthcare premium subsidies for Obamacare enrollees. Those premiums are set to expire on Dec. 31. So far, Republicans have not budged.
“[T]his is a Schumer shutdown, that he hates, but he owns it,” Mullin said. “He is the one that’s holding the federal workers hostage at this point and refusing to pay them because we can open this up tomorrow.”
Mullin said Schumer is refusing to back the Republicans’ bill to placate the Democratic base and to avoid a potential primary challenge from Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) in 2028.
The senator then tried tying the “No Kings” protest to the shutdown, claiming that Schumer is worried about the “optics” of voting for Republicans’ legislation.
“I’m kinda curious what they’re gonna protest,” Mullin said. “So here, you have a president that literally, the world is praising because he’s the president of peace. He’s literally leading the world now. And yet they are still going to protest him? Because why? The economy is so bad? Because their streets are safer? Because he’s bringing the [Israeli] hostages home? I mean, what are you really protesting against, other than your deranged hatred towards President Trump?”
