President Donald Trump reportedly scolded Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for being pessimistic following a conditional agreement from Hamas to Trump’s peace proposal.
According to Axios, Trump called Netanyahu on Friday expecting a positive reaction to Hamas announcing it will release Israeli hostages provided “field conditions for the exchange are met.” But Netanyahu felt differently about the new development in the ongoing peace talks.
“Bibi told Trump this is nothing to celebrate, and that it doesn’t mean anything,” an unnamed U.S. official told Axios.
And that response — according to the report from Barak Ravid and Marc Caputo of Axios — caused Trump to snap at the Israeli leader.
“I don’t know why you’re always so f*cking negative,” Trump reportedly told Netanyahu. “This is a win. Take it.”
In an interview with Axios on Saturday, Trump said that Netanyahu eventually came around.
“He was fine with it,” Trump told Axios. “He’s got to be fine with it. He has no choice. With me, you got to be fine.”
In a Friday night video filmed in the Oval Office, Trump crowed about the agreement.
“I just want to let you know that this is a very special day! Maybe unprecedented, in many ways it is unprecedented,” Trump said. He added, “Everybody was unified in wanting this war to end and seeing peace in the Middle East. And we’re very close to achieving that.”
