Alex O’Keefe, an award-winning screenwriter for the hit FX show The Bear, posted a video on Instagram of Metropolitan Transit Authority police officers arresting him while he was traveling on a train to Connecticut, along with a caption that said his arrest was sparked by an “old white lady” complaining about how he was sitting.

O’Keefe has also been a speechwriter for Sens. Elizabeth Warren (D-MA) and Ed Markey (D-MA). In the sole post on his Instagram account, O’Keefe shared two video clips and two photos from the train incident, along with a caption.

The full caption read:

I was arrested on the @MTA train to Connecticut today, pulled off, handcuffed, and detained. An old white woman got on the train and immediately pointed at me and told me to correct how I was sitting. I refused so she went to the conductor and complained. The conductor called the police and stopped the train. While waiting for the police to arrive, the old Karen’s friend said “You’re not the minority anymore.” The police told me to leave the train, I refused and asked what was I doing illegally. They said I was disturbing the peace by not leaving the train. They pulled me off the train and arrested me without even talking to the Karen who reported the one black person on the train. On the platform, the police detained me and interrogated me. Only black folks stayed nearby and recorded the arrest. When I demanded a lawyer and reminded them they didn’t even take a statement from the woman who complained they eventually released me. This country is growing more psycho by the day. What will you do about it?

“You arrest the one Black dude on the train because this white woman said she didn’t like the way I was sitting on the train,” O’Keefe can be heard saying to the MTA officers in the first video clip, “so you call the police, you call the police to arrest the one Black dude on the train?”

“I haven’t done anything illegal!” O’Keefe said multiple times, his voice growing more agitated, and he complained to the police officers that he was just “sitting on the train and one white woman didn’t like my presence.”

He repeatedly asked the officers why he was being arrested as they put handcuffs on him, and disputing that he was being “disorderly,” arguing that he was just “sitting on the train.”

A female MTA officer ordered him to “Stop resisting! Give me your arm!” and he replied, “Resisting what?! What are you trying to arrest me for?”

“I was sitting on a train and you’re trying to arrest me for, what?” he continued. “Can I not even know what you’re trying to arrest me for?”

O’Keefe posted two photos he said were of the woman who complained about how he was sitting and another man who told him “you’re not the minority anymore.”

A second video clip posted by O’Keefe was taken by a bystander and showed him off the train, handcuffed with several MTA officers around him.

“How did they know she was talking about you?” a woman off camera calls out to O’Keefe.

“They don’t know,” he replied. “They just pointed — they just saw a Black guy and they arrested me.”

O’Keefe’s post drew a flood of angry reactions, and has been widely shared on other platforms, including a TikTok post that went viral, racking up hundreds of thousands of views.

@nalae @MTA will you be removing the conductor who acted like an attack dog for a racist old woman while using your transportation? or is it your official policy to call the police on people for being Black on the train? inquiring minds would like to know. #mta #trumpsamerica #fascism #jimcrow #racism ♬ Killing In the Name – Rage Against The Machine
