Former Republican congressman George Santos has been held in solitary confinement with no windows for nearly 30 days, according to Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA), who likened his prison conditions to “torture” on Monday.
“Former Congressman George Santos has been in solitary confinement for nearly 30 days in FCI Fairton NJ,” wrote Greene in a social media post. “They say it’s ‘for his safety’ due to threats.”
She continued:
I’m told he is in his cell 24 hours per day and he is only allowed to get a shower 3 times a week.
He does not get any sunlight.
He’s only allowed to buy stamps from the commissary and is drinking water from the sink.
He is in the cell on the right marked “after” and there are no windows.
This is torture.
I have sent a letter asking for his sentence to commuted, 87 months is way too long for the crimes he was sentenced for.
There are criminals as we speak serving in Congress and many other former government officials that are criminals walking free that did far more heinous things than George Santos!!!
George Santos had a better voting record than MOST members of Congress!!!
Including EVERYONE who voted to expel him!!!
Honestly, George should be pardoned!!!
Greene attached a drawing of Santos’ prison cell, which is furnished with just a bed and a combined toilet-sink.
According to Greene, Santos had previously been held in a much larger cell with windows and a shower.
Santos has been serving an 87-month prison sentence for identity theft and wire fraud at the Federal Correctional Institution, Fairton since July.
The former congressman – who pleaded with Trump unsuccessfully for a pardon in May – repeatedly expressed concern about being “brutalized” in prison and revealed earlier this year that he had requested protective custody.
“I’m not asking for special treatment, I’m just asking for protective custody so that I don’t become a statistic,” he told Piers Morgan in May. “I’m not fearful of dying in there, I’m more fearful of being severely brutalized and harmed, if you get my drift.”
Santos expressed similar fears during a July interview with Tucker Carlson.
“I’m not a street-wise guy. I don’t know how to fight. I’m a gay man. Statistics tell you what happens to gay men in prison,” he said.
Last month, Greene formally requested that President Donald Trump commute Santos’ 87-month prison sentence.
“While his crimes warrant punishment, many of my colleagues who I serve with have committed far worse offenses than Mr. Santos yet have faced zero criminal charges,” she wrote. “Commuting his sentence would acknowledge the severity of his actions and simultaneously provide a path forward in allowing him to make amends for his crimes and strive to better serve the people in his community.”
