The National Gallery’s Sofia Arsenal – Museum of Contemporary Art (SAMCA) will present Wind Forest, an exhibition by sculptor Todor Todorov, from October 30 to December 7, 2025. The vernissage will take place on October 30, Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the museum, located at 2 Cherni Vrah Blvd in Sofia. The Bulgarian News Agency is media partner of the event.
Wind Forest features a series of kinetic sculptures inspired by nature, where art and the environment merge in a dynamic dialogue. Movement and light transform the surrounding space into a living, breathing organism, symbolizing harmony between humans and nature through art that is not merely observed, but experienced.
“Wind is the most elusive element in sculpture. In Wind Forest, it comes to life,” says Todorov, known as the sculptor of natural elements.
Todor Todorov is among Bulgaria’s leading contemporary sculptors — an internationally recognized artist whose work blends philosophical depth, engineering precision, and poetic sensitivity. His monumental sculptures are installed in public spaces around the world, exploring the interplay between form, movement, and energy.
As a theoretician, Todorov developed the concept of elemental sculpture — a direction in contemporary art where the natural forces of air, water, fire, and earth become active participants in the creative process. These elements not only inspire but also shape the meaning of the artwork: wind moves, water reflects, fire (light) enlivens, and earth provides stability and presence.
His book Elemental Sculpture. Theory and Practice was published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing in 2013 and in Bulgarian by Altera Publishers in 2014. In it, Todorov elaborates the idea of sculpture–natural elements as a new interaction between art and the environment, where nature is not merely a backdrop but an equal partner in the creation of the work.
For Todorov, sculpture is a living system — a synthesis of art, science, and nature. His works seek not images, but states — movement, light, and harmony — radiating life and tranquillity while reflecting the rhythm and eternal transformation of nature.
The Wind Forest project embodies this philosophy in its purest form. Through his wind sculptures, Todorov transforms public space into a living organism — a place where art and nature breathe in unison. The exhibition invites viewers to reconsider art’s role not as an accessory, but as a living presence in the shared world between humanity and the environment.
The exhibition is part of Sofia Paper Art Fest 2025 and is implemented with the financial support of the Culture Ministry, the Visual Arts Programme of the Ministry of Culture, the Sofia Municipality Calendar of Cultural Events for 2025, the Sofia Municipality Mobility Programme, Star Motors Bulgaria, Takeda, and JBBA.
