The Pentagon’s widely-criticized new restrictions on journalists — which reportedly forbid reporters from publishing “unauthorized” information even if it’s not classified — seem to have gone too far even for President Donald Trump.
Speaking with reporters outside the White House on Sunday en route to Charlie Kirk’s memorial service in Arizona, the president said he is not in favor of the Pentagon allowing journalists to only report information it approves beforehand.
“Should the Pentagon be part of deciding what reporters can report on?” A reporter asked Trump.
“No, I don’t think so,” Trump said. “Nothing stops reporters, you know that.”
The Washington Post reported on Friday that the Pentagon is forcing journalists to sign a new policy in which they agree not to gather information which has not been approved for public release. The policy has been denounced by news organizations and members of both parties.
“This is so dumb that I have a hard time believing it is true,” said Rep. Don Bacon (R-NE) in a post on X Saturday. “We don’t want a bunch of Pravda newspapers only touting the Government’s official position. A free press makes our country better. This sounds like more amateur hour.”
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth defended the policy, stating, “The ‘press’ does not run the Pentagon — the people do. The press is no longer allowed to roam the halls of a secure facility. Wear a badge and follow the rules — or go home.”
Of note, the clip was shared by the official Rapid Response 47 account — a rare instance of that account amplifying a position which contradicts a stance held by another department of Trump’s government.
