President Donald Trump deemed Democrats the party of “Satan” on Thursday amid the ongoing shutdown of the federal government.
The government shut down on Wednesday after the Senate failed to agree on a stopgap funding measure. Although Republicans control the chamber 53-47, 60 votes are required to overcome a procedural hurdle to advance the legislation. In exchange for Democratic votes, Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) wants Republicans to include an extension of Covid-era healthcare premium subsidies for Obamacare. Unless those subsidies are extended, premiums for more than 20 million Americans could more than double each month from $888 a month to $1,904 after the subsidies expire on Dec. 31.
Trump and Republicans have falsely claimed that Democrats are attempting to give government healthcare to unauthorized immigrants, which is already illegal.
On Thursday night, the president went on a mini-posting spree on his Truth Social platform, during which he falsely claimed that he had presided over “record Black employment.”
Perhaps the most notable post, however, was a collage of prominent Democrats, including Schumer, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and former President Joe Biden.
“The Party of Hate, Evil, and Satan,” text on the image read. “The Democratic Party is Dead! They have no leadership! no message! no hope! their only message for America is to hate Trump!”

While many Republicans have called on Democrats to tone down their rhetoric in the wake of last month’s assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, Trump has hardly led by example. The president repeatedly called his political opponents “fascists” on the campaign trail last year and warned of the “enemy within,” a phrase he used this week to justify his deployment of the military in the U.S.
