FBI Director Kash Patel raged at MSNBC Saturday over its reporting on his agency’s alleged desired handling of the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey.
Comey was indicted by a grand jury last week for perjury and obstruction stemming from his 2020 testimony to Congress.
Patel’s vitriol was piqued after MSNBC’s Jesse Rodriguez posted to X, “MSNBC confirms: An FBI agent in the Washington field office has been fired for refusing to arrest and perp walk James Comey.”
That led former U.S. Attorney and MSNBC legal analyst Barb McQuade to respond, “DOJ policy prohibits ‘perp walks,’ in which arrestees are paraded before the cameras.”
Patel jumped on McQuade’s post, writing, “BREAKING: MSNBC still an ass clown factory of disinformation. Same circus animals that slobbered all over perp walks of Stone, Navarro, Bannon…MSNBC has no facts and no audience. In this @fbi, follow the chain of command or get relieved.
McQuade responded in a since deleted post, “I don’t recall perp walks in those cases, but whataboutism is not a defense that will be recognized in court.”
CBS News reported Friday night that Patel’s FBI was considering a “showy” arrest of Comey after the indictment:
[O]n the same day as his indictment, FBI leadership discussed hauling Comey in instead of waiting for the ex-FBI chief to report to court on his own, a source knowledgeable about the conversions told CBS News.
The source told CBS News that leadership asked for “large, beefy” agents to conduct an arrest of Comey “in full kit,” including Kevlar vests and exterior wear emblazoned with the FBI logo. It was suggested that Chris Ray, a supervisory special agent in the violent crimes division of the FBI’s Washington Field Office, would be able to put together the kinds of agents who fit the bill, the source said.
Comey responded to the indictment by proclaiming his innocence and stating, “Let’s have a trial.” Legal experts like conservative attorney George Conway have called the indictment “invalid” on procedural grounds.
