President Donald Trump reportedly contacted Venezuelan Nobel Peace Prize Winner María Corina Machado on Friday to congratulate her on her win, according to Bloomberg.
Bloomberg’s reporting cited anonymous sources “familiar with the matter, despite speculation that [Trump] would be indignant at not receiving the award himself.”
Trump openly campaigned for the prize, citing his work to bring peace to the Middle East and other hot-spot areas around the globe. He was nominated by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and a variety of U.S. lawmakers and other world leaders.
The president has not reacted publicly to Friday’s award announcement from the Nobel Committee in Norway. He did, however, repost Machado’s social media statement dedicating the award to the U.S. president and to the Venezuelan people.
In her post, Machado praised Trump for his “decisive support” against Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro. Trump called for Maduro to give up power and recognize the election winner, who was supported by Machado, “after Maduro prevented her from running,” the report said.
“We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the peoples of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our principal allies to achieve Freedom and democracy,” Machado wrote on X.
In its announcement, the Nobel Committee stated, “[Machado] is receiving the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy. As the leader of the democracy movement in Venezuela, Maria Corina Machado is one of the most extraordinary examples of civilian courage in Latin America in recent times.”
