President Donald Trump blasted Colombian leader Gustavo Petro as a “thug” who better shut his yap, or else he will take “very serious action” and do it for him.
The president’s ruthless warning was made on Wednesday at the White House, after he was asked by a female reporter about Petro saying “humanity” should “get rid” of Trump during an interview earlier this week.
“Well, he’s a thug and a bad guy. He’s a guy who is making a lot of drugs,” Trump started off his reply.
He then weaved in a quip about his administration’s battle with Columbia University, before moving on to threatening Petro.
“As of today, we have stopped all payments going to Colombia — the country Colombia — also the school Columbia,” Trump said, drawing a few laughs. “No, we settled.”
Trump continued: “He’s hurt his country very badly, they’re doing very poorly, Colombia. They make cocaine — they have cocaine factories. They grow all sorts of crap — that’s drugs, bad drugs coming into the United States, goes generally through Mexico. And he better watch it, or we’ll take very serious action against him and his country.”
The commander-in-chief added that Petro has turned Colombia into a “death trap” since becoming president in 2022.
Trump’s response added to the back-and-forth barbs he has been trading with Petro recently. Petro accused the U.S. of murdering Colombian fishermen last week — a claim Trump said was absolute nonsense. Trump said the U.S. struck and killed two “narcoterrorists” who were traveling in a “drug-carrying submarine” to the States.
The president, in a Truth Social Post on Oct. 19, skewered Petro as an unpopular “fresh mouth” politician who is also an “illegal drug leader.” Petro responded with his “get rid” of comment the following day in an interview with Univision.
