White House Communications director Stephen Cheung accused the Nobel Committee of “placing politics over peace” on Friday after the Norwegian panel awarded this year’s Peace Prize to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado instead of his boss, President Donald Trump.
The decision came after Trump’s months-long campaign for the honor, which he framed as international recognition of his role in brokering ceasefires and hostage agreements, including this week’s deal to end the war in Gaza.
Instead, Machado, a long-time critic of Venezuela’s government, was recognized for leading what the committee called “courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist” autocratic rule.
Responding to the news Cheung quipped on X: “The Nobel Committee proved they place politics over peace.”
Trump, who has repeatedly claimed credit for “ending eight wars” since taking office, has long complained that the Nobel establishment refuses to acknowledge his record.
In an address at Quantico with U.S. military leaders last month, he predicted the outcome: “Will you get the Nobel Prize? Absolutely not. They’ll give it to some guy that didn’t do a damn thing.”
Despite the gripe, nominations for this year’s prize closed before Trump’s second inauguration in January, meaning his latest diplomatic moves were not eligible for consideration.
