UCLA’s historic upset of Penn State Saturday led to some in the extremely small crowd at the Rose Bowl to rush the field. And one security guard’s hilarious pursuit of a little girl who made it on to the gridiron went viral as a fail that many young parents can relate to.

The fans were moved to storm the field after UCLA’s improbable 42-37 victory over Penn State, the No. 7 team in America. UCLA was nearly a four touchdown underdog in the contest after starting its season with four straight bad losses. Somehow, they beat a Penn State team thought to be a lock for the college football playoff which sports a roster laden with NFL-level talent.

In footage captured by Collin Ward of student-run Penn State news outlet Onward State, a little girl — accompanied by an adult holding her hand — sprinted toward midfield to join in the celebration. A security guard was seen trying to corral her. But — in an experience anyone who’s chased after a toddler can identify with — the girl was able to dart away, leaving the guard winded and throwing in the towel.

The guard’s failed pursuit of the tiny fan was one of several viral moments produced by the remarkable game. Rick Neuheisel — the father of UCLA offensive coordinator Jerry Neuheisel — got emotional on air at CBS after the Bruins victory.

“To Penn State fans, I apologize,” Rick Neuheisel said — regarding his inability to provide neutral commentary. “But my dad goggles were on big-time today. But all of us as parents understand that.”

Making the outcome all the more remarkable, Jerry Neuheisel had just been given the job as offensive coordinator within the past week — and yet was able to create a game plan which generated 42 points of offense on one of the most stout defenses in college football.
