John Oliver took aim at President Donald Trump’s White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller on Last Week Tonight Sunday branding him “a f*cking loser” that even “white supremacists” must be “embarrassed” by, after the top aide’s speech to police officers in Memphis last week.
The tirade came after federal and state authorities ramped up policing in Memphis under the newly expanded Memphis Safe Task Force, which now includes at least 219 federally deputized officers.
“You are unleashed,” declared Miller, addressing officers during the visit. He framed the mission in uncompromising terms: “We are going to bulldoze the criminal elements in this city, and therefore liberate the law-abiding citizens.”
“In a speech that I’m sure sounded tough in his head,” Oliver said, before rolling footage of Miller telling officers that “we are so much more hardcore than they are,” referring to local “gangbangers.”
Oliver then paused: “I’ve got to say, at this point, white supremacists just have to be embarrassed, right? This is your champion, right here? A man who looks like he still has a soft spot on his skull?!?”
Miller, who recently helped draft Trump’s executive orders expanding federal police powers in cities such as Memphis and Chicago, has become the face of the administration’s escalating law-and-order push.
