Balgarianovinite.com Caretaker Agriculture and Food Minister Ivan Hristanov said on Thursday that he does not expect a significant increase in the prices of goods. He was speaking to journalists after a meeting with President Iliana Iotova, during which they shared concerns about prices, the resilience of the agri-food chain and the situation of Bulgarian farmers amid the crisis in the Middle East, as well as rising oil and nitrogen fertiliser prices.
Hristanov noted that there is an oversupply of pork on the European market. As for bread and bakery products, Bulgaria’s grain balance currently shows a surplus of 1 million tonnes compared with the same period last year.
He explained that when commodity prices remain stable while the costs of energy and fertilisers increase, a crisis buffer is absorbed by producers. “What we discussed with the President is what these buffers are,” he added.
Hristanov said that EUR 557 million will be allocated to the agricultural sector over the next three months to ensure its liquidity and ability to cover costs. He added that further measures are being planned, many of which are already prepared. As an example, he cited a measure involving a reduction in the excise duty on gas oil, where the rate is set to increase from EUR 0.21 to EUR 0.31 per litre. The Minister said the measure has already been approved by the Ministry of Finance and is awaiting notification.
Hristanov also said that he had discussed with sector organizations the possibility of the Agriculture Ministry, together with the Ministry of Economy and Industry, working towards convening an extraordinary parliamentary session. The aim is to adopt urgent measures, such as state support for nitrogen fertilizers, which represent the largest cost and have the greatest impact on final consumer prices.
Thursday’s discussion was part of a series of meetings initiated by the President on the need for effective measures to mitigate the economic impact of the conflict in the Middle East. Earlier in the day, Iotova met with caretaker Tourism Minister Irena Georgieva.
