Balgarianovinite.com A total of EUR 1 million has been seized in police operations against vote buying, Interior Ministry Secretary General Georgi Kandev said in a social media post Tuesday. In an earlier post, he said that an online ring for vote-buying has been dismantled.
Kandev wrote: “It is EUR 1 million, with which someone thought they could buy conscience, replace free will, and steal Bulgaria’s future. This is not just a crime. It is a blow against statehood.”
He also notes that there will be no “umbrella”, no untouchables, and no compromises on the part of the Ministry of Interior.
He urged people not to sell their vote and allow being instrumentalized. “The value of your vote is not money – it is the future. Democracy is not to sale,” he wrote on Facebook.
Also on Facebook, Kandev said that five people have been arrested in a new scheme for buying votes via online payments using a popular payment platform.
During questioning, the detainees said that they had to open an account on the online platform for all voters willing to sell their votes, to be paid there EUR 50 to vote a certain way.
The authorities were alerted about the scheme via the 112 emergency number. A witness told the operator that several individuals were collecting IDs and offering money to vote for one party. Police identified seven people using two vehicles in the operation. They also found EUR 2,050, 25 mobile phones and multiple prepaid SIM cards.
