Balgarianovinite.com Celebrations marking the 205th anniversary of the birth of Georgi Sava Rakovski and the patron holiday of Georgi Sava Rakovski Bolhrad High School began on Tuesday with a wreath-laying ceremony at the monument to the Bulgarian freedom fighter.
The ceremony took place in front of the school’s main entrance and was attended by Bulgaria’s Consul General in Odesa Svetoslav Ivanov, Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) Director General Kiril Valchev, Executive Agency for Bulgarians Abroad Executive Director Raina Mandzhukova, MusicAutor Chief Executive Officer Ivan Dimitrov, Sofia University Rector Georgi Valchev, Izmail State University of Humanities Rector Yaroslav Kichuk, and G.S. Rakovski Bolhrad High School Principal Snezhana Skorich.
The festive programme began with students performing Bulgarian music. In their remarks, they emphasized the school’s role as a spiritual and educational centre for the Bulgarian community in Bessarabia. “Our school is a temple of knowledge; in the steppe of Budjak it is a shining beacon. Here every heart, with love and dedication, preserves the sacred heritage of our ancestors,” the students that were hosting the programme said.
They recalled that Georgi Sava Rakovski is one of the most significant figures of the Bulgarian National Revival – a revolutionary, publicist and enlightener whose work continues to inspire generations. They further emphasized that Rakovski viewed education as a path to freedom and that the school has long been a centre fostering knowledge, values and love for the homeland, preserving traditions and historical memory.
The students also noted that Bolhrad High School has educated a number of prominent figures, including Bulgarian prime ministers Aleksandar Malinov (1908–1911; 1918) and Dimitar Grekov (1899), as well as senior military leaders, scientists and educators who contributed to the development of Bulgarian science and education.
During the ceremony, the flag group took its place of honour by the monument to Rakovski, while representatives of the administration, teachers, students and official guests laid wreaths in tribute.
Shortly after the official opening ceremony ended at around 1:50 pm, an air raid alert was declared in the southern part of Odesa Region. The alert was lifted at 2:13 pm.
The official programme will continue with a ceremonial induction of fifth-grade students into the school community, the opening of the BG Focus BTA press club at the school, and a visit to the Bolhrad High School Museum of History.
