Balgarianovinite.com The 152nd Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) opened officially in Istanbul Wednesday. The event which will be on until April 19, gathered delegations from 155 countries, including Bulgaria. Among the participants are 77 parliament chairs and 800 deputies from around the world.
The Assembly is hosted by the Grand National Assembly of Turkiye, chaired by Numan Kurtulmus.
The main theme will be “Nurturing hope, securing peace and ensuring justice for future generations”. Kurtulmus told a press conference.
Among the participants is also the President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Petra Bayr (Austria). On the sidelines of the forum, she conferred with Numan Kurtulmus.
At the opening of the forum, Kurtulmus said that at a time when the international system faces growing uncertainty and complex challenges, the responsibility of parliaments to act with vision and determination has never been greater. He stressed that strengthening dialogue, raising a collective voice against injustice and conflict, and developing new ideas for a better world is a duty owed to future generations. He also expressed hope that the forum would provide an opportunity for the union to send strong messages in support of peace, democracy, and multilateralism, and to help reinforce these principles globally.
A Bulgarian delegation is also taking part, including Stefana Karaslavova, Secretary General of the National Assembly and member of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments, Teodora Angelova, Ekaterina Georgieva, and Stefka Aleksandrova. The Bulgarian delegation is expected to participate in the regular meetings of the Association of Secretaries General of Parliaments.
The fate of Palestinian women and children was the focus of a session at the forum of women parliamentarians. In her address, the session chair, Turkish parliamentarian Fatma Aksal, stressed that the situation in Palestine and Israel’s expansionist policy are the main problem in the region.
The Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union is the main governing body of the global organization of parliaments, which meets twice a year. It adopts resolutions on international issues and promotes peace, democracy, and sustainable development through parliamentary diplomacy. Delegations from national parliaments around the world participate in it. The current assembly is the spring session.
