Balgarianovinite.com Addressing the Spring Meetings of the IMF and World Bank in Washington D.C., International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director underscored the risk of physical disruptions to global supply chains due to the conflict in the Middle East.
She said the impact could worsen in the coming weeks, with April potentially more difficult than March. According to her, shortages are already affecting not only oil and gas, but also diesel, helium, and other raw materials, especially in Asia, which is highly dependent on imports from the Persian Gulf. She warned that these disruptions would persist even if the conflict ended immediately, describing them as a slow-moving crisis with characteristics more typical of the 20th century.
Georgieva explained that supply chains are affected by delays: tankers that left the region before hostilities began have reached their destinations, while new shipments are lagging behind.
She urged governments to act quickly to reduce energy demand through measures such as free public transport, incentives for its use, and remote work.
She also said new energy sources and alternative routes are being developed, but these will take time – around one to one and a half years – making short-term measures essential to ease imbalances.
The IMF is also tracking rising inflation pressures linked to the crisis. In its latest outlook, it raised the global inflation forecast to 4.4% for 2026. While inflation had been easing before the conflict, the trend has now reversed, with short-term expectations rising in the US and euro area. Long-term expectations, however, remain stable, suggesting recovery is still possible if hostilities end soon.
The Fund also warned of a possible food crisis if fertilizer supplies are not restored, noting that urea prices in Africa have doubled from about USD 400 to 800 per tonne.
It expects short-term demand for financial support to rise by USD 20–50 billion, with 39 active programmes and around 12 additional countries seeking assistance, many in Sub-Saharan Africa.
On monetary policy, the IMF advises central banks to avoid rushing into rate hikes solely to fight inflation, while maintaining a clear commitment to price stability.
