Balgarianovinite.com Caretaker Prime Minister Andrey Gurov said Constitution Day combines the legacy of the Tarnovo Constitution, one of the most progressive of its time, with the 35th anniversary of the Constitutional Court, a key guarantor of Bulgaria’s modern constitutional order.
Speaking at a ceremony in Veliko Tarnovo Thursday, Gurov stressed that the day is not only about marking history, but about reaffirming Bulgaria’s belonging to European civilization and its commitment to democracy, echoing Bulgarian revolutionary and freedom fighter Vasil Levski’s (1837-1873) vision of equality with other European nations.
He noted that Bulgaria chose the European path both after its liberation from Ottoman rule and after the fall of communism with the 1991 Constitution, reflecting a long-standing aspiration for a free and just society governed by the rule of law.
Gurov acknowledged that the country has not fully achieved the ideals set during the National Revival, pointing to a persistent public sense of injustice and uneven application of the law even more than 35 years after the democratic transition.
He expressed hope that the Constitutional Court will continue to uphold its mission despite criticism, warning that without such an institution, the country risks straying from its democratic ideals.
Addressing young people pursuing careers in law, Gurov said they have chosen a worthy profession but also a major responsibility – to prove daily that law serves justice and the common good, and encouraged them to help build a fair and well-ordered state.
