Balgarianovinite.com Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan outlined Turkiye’s position on conflicts and dialogue with its neighbouring countries, and listed the principles upon which new rules of international law should be built. His speech at the official opening of the Antalya Diplomacy Forum focused on humanism and dialogue.
“We do not confine this forum to the scope of diplomatic contacts. We view it as a platform for exchanging views, for in-depth discussions on where the world is headed, what values we can agree upon, and what new opportunities for influence may arise,” Erdogan stated.
He expressed the view that diplomacy is moving beyond the realm of seeking benefits and engaging in disputes and negotiations, and is initiating discussions on the foundations upon which humanity’s shared future will be built.
“Yes, the balance of power is shifting. Yes, new players are on the rise. Yes, competition is heating up, intensifying, and becoming more destructive. But this does not change the reality that we are facing a far more severe turning point. Today, in addition to a crisis of power, the world is also experiencing a crisis of stability. From a certain perspective, it is clear that we are standing at a serious and dangerous threshold – the system, which claims to be governed by rules, remains silent even when those rules are violated. The mechanisms tasked with protecting human rights and global security remain powerless and, in many cases, even indifferent in the face of the most severe attacks,” Erdogan emphasized.
The Turkish President spoke again about the casualties in Gaza. “The number of Palestinians who have lost their lives is 73,000, the wounded number over 172,000, and more than 21,000 of the dead are children,” Erdogan said.
According to him, what is happening in Gaza should not be viewed solely as a human tragedy. “What is happening in Gaza shows very clearly what the current system allows (…) and who is turning a blind eye. We all have a duty to search our hearts and courageously seek answers to these questions. If a system cannot protect young children from bullets, if it cannot prevent civilians from being targeted, if the rules and institutions cannot prevent the cruelty of tyrants, is that not rot at its very core?” asked the Turkish President.
Erdogan commented on the situation regarding passage through the Strait of Hormuz following the outbreak of war between Iran and the US and Israel. “Our position on the rising tensions regarding passage through the Strait of Hormuz is very clear. If one arm of the strait belongs to Iran, the other belongs to Oman. The right of the Gulf states to access the open sea must not be obstructed,” said Erdogan. He expressed the view that the strait must remain open to commercial vessels.
Regarding the situation in Syria, Erdogan expressed satisfaction with the efforts made by President Ahmed al-Sharaa for peace and stability in Syria. He emphasized that these efforts are of vital importance.
Erdogan expressed satisfaction with the warming of relations with Armenia and its reconciliation with Azerbaijan, emphasizing that this would facilitate trade between Europe and Asia through a new transport corridor.
The Turkish President underscored that his country continues to pursue its goal of full membership in the European Union. “History, geography, and geopolitics remind us that Turkiye is part of Europe,” Erdogan said.
He also highlighted the efforts the country will make to promote dialogue while hosting the NATO Summit, which will take place in Ankara, and the climate summit COP 31, which will bring world leaders together in Antalya.
The forum in Antalya, taking place from April 17 to 19, brings together 22 presidents and prime ministers, 14 vice presidents or deputy prime ministers, 39 interior ministers, 79 representatives of international organizations, and over 500 high-level representatives. Nearly 5,000 people have arrived for the event, including representatives from academia and students, and 1,100 accredited journalists will cover the programme in Antalya, which includes over 40 events.
