Balgarianovinite.com Negotiations between the Hungarian oil company MOL, as a future shareholder in the Serbian oil company NIS, and the Government of Serbia are in their final stage, Mining and Energy Minister Dubravka Djedovic Handanovic told Serbia’s public broadcaster RTS.
On Tuesday, the operational and legal teams of the Serbian Government and representatives of MOL discussed the rights and obligations of shareholders in NIS – Serbia’s only oil company, in which the State holds less than 30%.
“I expect that by the end of the week we will have agreed on around 90% of the positions,” the Minister said.
MOL is negotiating with the Russian majority owner of NIS to purchase 56.15% of the capital, in fulfilment of a US condition for lifting sanctions if Russian ownership is fully transferred to other parties. The US administration has set May 22 as the deadline for these negotiations.
Separately, MOL is discussing with the Serbian Government the parameters of the rights and obligations of shareholders in NIS, Djedovic told RTS, adding that it is important for these talks to continue.
“We want to ensure first and foremost that NIS remains the dominant company in our market, that the refinery must have a certain annual processing capacity or an average over a specified number of years. This is important for our gross domestic product, for our employment, and for the security of supply,” the Minister said.
She noted that the global energy crisis, triggered after US and Israeli strikes against Iran, shows “how important it is to have a refinery in your country that you can rely on to prevent disruptions in fuel supplies”.
Asked whether a change of Government in Hungary could alter the political framework of the negotiations with MOL, the Energy Minister said that Hungary is a neighbour with which Serbia has exceptionally strong political and economic relations.
Speaking about energy supplies in Serbia, the Minister said that the country is extremely well supplied and has the largest reserves in the region, which, in her words, is the result of the responsible policy pursued in previous years.
She added that this primarily means that the refinery in Pancevo will continue to operate, noting that the flow of crude oil has increased, as has its processing.
“The monthly processing of crude oil in April alone will amount to around 330,000 tonnes. Processing increased in April because the inflow of crude oil also rose. In the past 10 days alone, we had two ships of about 90,000 tonnes each, and by the end of April we expect a further 130,000 tonnes of crude oil, and by the end of May as much as 240,000 tonnes,” Djedovic told RTS on Tuesday.
