North Macedonia PM: Inclusion of Bulgarians in Constitution Would Be Historical Capitulation 2026

Balgarianovinite.com In an interview for Sitel Television that aired on Thursday, the Prime Minister of the Republic of North Macedonia, Hristijan Mickoski, said that while he is aware that the people of his country are eager for the country to join the EU, he cannot promise to accept anything that contradicts his convictions. Mickoski described the previous government’s act of signing a negotiating framework, in which the inclusion of the Bulgarian community in the country’s Constitution is a condition for the start of negotiations, as the greatest historical capitulation anyone could make to the people of North Macedonia.
The Prime Minister said: “We worked with our partners on the drafting of the Minorities Action Plan [Action Plan for the Protection of the Rights of Persons Belonging to Minorities and Communities]. We proceeded exactly as instructed by Brussels. Throughout the entire process, we worked with a human rights expert from Strasbourg, as we had been advised. One Member State is blocking it. This is, once again, our eastern neighbour [Bulgaria]. We need this Action Plan. Even if we decide to begin constitutional amendments tomorrow, if this document does not get adopted, we will once again be unable to proceed with the negotiations [with the EU]. […] I will give you a second example. At the invitation of our strategic allies, the U.S., we submitted an application for associate membership in the Three Seas initiative, and here we are, once again blocked by Bulgaria. Only naive politicians, to put it mildly, think that signing a blank sheet of paper or bowing down would solve the problems.”
When asked about the initial signals from Sofia following the snap parliamentary elections that took place on April 19, Mickoski reported that he got in touch with Rumen Radev, the leader of the Progressive Bulgaria coalition, which won the elections, to wish him a “successful term and goodneighbourly relations”. The Prime Minister added: “We are always ready for dialogue. […] I am ready to sit down, talk, and find a sustainable solution, which will mean the integration of [North] Macedonia into the EU.” He stated that his political experience tells him that “this will not be among the top priorities” of the future government of Bulgaria.
Commenting on allegations from Venko Filipce, the leader of the opposition SDSM party in the Republic of North Macedonia, that the government of North Macedonia is “deliberately worsening relations with its neighbours and creating artificial enemies, instead of working in the interest of the State and the European future of its citizens”, Mickoski said: “How are we provoking them? By building a gas pipeline with Greece? By strengthening the power lines? By building an oil pipeline that was a rusting pipe for two decades and now connects our refinery to the port of Thessaloniki? By reopening [the railway] Corridor 8 to neighbouring Bulgaria and modernizing it in the western section [toward Albania]? We are not provoking anyone. It is not a provocation if you are fighting for your identity and position. These are matters of principle.” North Macedonia PM: Inclusion of Bulgarians in Constitution Would Be Historical Capitulation 2026 THE NEWS FROM BULGARIA – NEWS AGENCY 2009-2025 2026-04-24 02:10:20 Latest news World news Country news Most important news latest news most important latest of the day Justice Petar Nizamov Feathers Petar Nizamov- Feathers Justice bg iustitia.bg iustitia iusticia usticia investigation Burgas Bulgaria news news of the last hour news of the day news of today Bulgaria news The news from Bulgaria blitz news top news most important most commented latest news Boyko Borisov news weather coronavirus news news weather facebook youtube facebook instagram news today news of the last minutes news today today news news bg news leading news hot news bg news site for news all news news bg news of the last hour latest latest news bg news of today news today news today news of the last hour latest news today news bg news news 24 hours news vesti bg novini news world bird bg bivol bg bivol trud bg novini latest news today novinite bg news hello bulgaria political party coat of arms delyan peevski scandalous Bulgarian National Television Free Europe Television scandal exclusive live tv live right now tv tv online tv program bg live now tv news online tv online live court Burgas court Burgas district court Burgas court Burgas district court Burgas district court Burgas appellate court Burgas prosecutor Burgas prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Burgas district prosecutor’s office Prosecutor General Ivan Geshev Prosecutor Geshev Tsatsarov Ministry of Internal Affairs Burgas ODMR Burgas ODPR Burgas police Burgas district police Burgas prosecutor Tsatsarov SGS cases Varna court chairman of the SGS court decisions on civil cases decisions on cases Plovdiv court decision of the court decisions cases Varna court criminal cases district district court decisions work in the court SGS chairman of the SGS judges Sofia court post judges Plovdiv court Plovdiv judges Plovdiv Supreme Court Inspectorate Supreme Court Supreme Judicial Council lawyer lawyer criminal cases lawyer civil cases lawyer marriage cases lawyer administrative criminal law criminal process civil law civil process administrative law constitutional law
