Construction on Kriva Palanka–border Tunnel Railway Section of Corridor VIII to Start in Summer 2026

Balgarianovinite.com Construction works on the railway section from Kriva Palanka to the tunnel between Bulgaria and North Macedonia, part of Pan-European Transport Corridor VIII, are expected to begin in the summer. The public procurement procedure for selecting a supervisor for the third stage of the route on the territory of North Macedonia has already been launched, and within the next ten days a tender for selecting a contractor is also expected to be announced, North Macedonia’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Aleksandar Nikoloski told journalists here on Thursday.
A working meeting with representatives of the European Commission and the EU Delegation in Skopje is taking place Thursday, focusing on ongoing work and plans related to the transport and railway Corridor VIII project, which connects the Bulgarian ports of Burgas and Varna (on the Black Sea) and passes through the territory of North Macedonia and Albania.
Nikoloski said he hopes that “as many European and global companies as possible” will apply for the supervision of the third and most complex section of the railway line. Regarding the joint construction of the tunnel between the two countries, he noted that “things are progressing well.”
“The second section (from Beljakovce to Kriva Palanka) is advancing at a slower pace, and we are currently overcoming the problems there. All 16 tunnels have already been excavated, and I expect completion around 2028,” Nikoloski said, adding that the deadline for completing the railway line remains 2031/2032.
According to him, the construction of the railway and road sections of Corridor VIII will cost around EUR 5 billion. Thursday’s meeting will also discuss the section of Rail Corridor VIII towards Albania, including the stretch from Skopje through Tetovo, Gostivar and Kicevo, where an existing railway line needs to be reconstructed, as well as the second section from Kicevo through Ohrid and Struga to the Albanian border.
