Balgarianovinite.com The acting Secretary General of the Ministry of Interior, Georgi Kandev, said on Friday he had been pressured. In a video on Facebook, Kandev said that on Thursday he received a message urging him to “go home”.
In his words, he received several calls on Thursday. Within ten minutes, from hidden numbers via a mobile app, he was informed that at that very moment, a person nicknamed “Kartofa” (The Potato) and his associates were giving false testimony against Kandev at the Sofia City Prosecution Office (SCPO). Kandev was told that they were organized by a former official at the Interior Ministry with the first name “Svetlyo.” The Secretary General posed several questions to the SCPO, including whether “convicted and criminally charged individuals” truly testified against him on Thursday and who were the puppet masters behind this scenario, and why were they acting now.
In his video, Kandev stated: “Silence is not an option. I will not back down!”
Reactions
Prime Minister Andrey Gurov said that the whole caretaker government and “every honest Bulgarian citizen” stand behind Georgi Kandev. He described the alleged pressure against the acting Secretary General of the Interior Ministry as a “vendetta” taking place at the SCPO under prosecutor Emilia Rusinova. The Prime Minister described Rusinova as “the ruler of parliamentary immunities, the prosecutor of the caretaker government”, and a “companion” of Petyo “The Euro” Petrov. A former investigating magistrate, Petrov is a notorious power broker in a criminal network for influencing the Bulgarian judiciary known as “The Eight Dwarfs” and currently a fugitive from justice. Prime Minister Gurov noted: “After we put a stop to the attacks on democracy and seized millions of euro being used to undermine the [April 19] elections, a conspiracy against the Secretary General has been set in motion.”
Interior Minister Emil Dechev commented that “old cops” are using dirty tricks “to undermine and neutralize Georgi Kandev”. Dechev expressed his full support for Kandev, saying he has no doubt about the Secretary General’s integrity. According to the Minister, the caretaker government and the Interior Ministry have demonstrated determination and the will to limit electoral crimes (“a plague on Bulgarian democracy”) to the absolute minimum.
Assen Vassilev, who leads the Continue the Change party, described the threats against Kandev as “absolutely scandalous”. Vassilev said: “The immediate replacement of the Supreme Judicial Council and the purging of the judicial system of all the little people is the only way to achieve a prosperous, just, and European Bulgaria.”
The Yes, Bulgaria party accused prosecutors of being used, “once again”, to target officials working for institutional reform. The party’s co-leader Ivaylo Mirchev said the prosecution service is being used as part of what he described as the “Borissov-Peevski model”. The reference was to Boyko Borissov and Delyan Peevski, who are blamed for a perceived state capture and corruption. Peevski, in particular, is allegedly a dark influence behind the judicial system.
