Balgarianovinite.com Rhythm and Friends folk formation from Wokingham, UK, will participate in the 11th Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance travelling festival, which will be held from May 15 to May 17 at BMW Park in Munich.
“This year, Rhythm and Friends Wokingham will present the Thracian dance Sedyanka. The dance features choreography created especially for the theme of this year’s eleventh edition of the festival, Libe le, libe hubavo (My Love, My Beautiful Love). It tells the story of the first meeting and first emotions of young women and men on the village square, at the gathering place where young people met and celebrated. It is where love was born, where hearts beat to the uneven rhythms of the Bulgarian horo, where receiving a maiden’s flower was the most exciting and meaningful moment for young men, and where young women declared their love to their chosen one… There… at the Sedyanka,” Elena Yonchevska, leader of the folk formation, told BTA.
She said that through the performance of this dance, the group hopes to touch and move the audience so that they feel as those who once took part in such gatherings felt, happy and full of love.
The choreography, stage direction and arrangement are by Elena Yonchevska, while the music is traditional folk.
She added that she founded the Rhythm folk formation in Wokingham in September 2018.
Elena Yonchevska said she began dancing at the age of 11. She later became a rehearsal instructor and assistant choreographer at the Rhythm folk formation and ensemble in Varna. According to her, with more than 25 years of experience in folk dance, she now keeps Bulgarian traditions and dances alive, passing them on to both children and adults devoted to their homeland.
“As leader of Rhythm Wokingham and the Friends amateur folk dance school in Oxford, I want to share my endless love for our folklore with both young and old,” Yonchevska said.
She added that the groups include both Bulgarians and foreigners from the United States, England and Turkiye, with the youngest participants currently aged seven and the oldest over 80.
The travelling festival Expats Join Hands in Worldwide Dance is organized by and for amateur folklore ensembles performing outside Bulgaria. The initiative was launched by the Ot Izvora group in Lyon, France, which hosted both the first edition in 2015 and the tenth edition in 2025. More than 100 dance ensembles and over 4,000 guests are expected at the 11th edition in Munich in May. The Bulgarian News Agency (BTA) is the official media partner of the event and will present all participants.
